Pro-Active Training Institute (PTI) was founed in 1998, under the original name of Pro-Active Firearms & Weapons Training (PFWT). The company started out providing Arizona Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) courses to law-abiding citizens. Other courses soon followed: Intermediate and Advance Handgun, Low Light Handgun, Shotgun Home Defense, Carbine Home Defense, Home Defense Tactics, and Vehicle Defense Tactics. These courses were only offered to those citizens with CCW permits.

In 1999, PFWT began providing training to corporate security teams. Initial courses included Control Holds & Handcuffing, Expandable Baton, and Pepper Spray. Other courses, such as the AZ Armed Guard certification course, were added later.

In 2001, PFWT expanded it's training into the law enforcement community. Since then, PFWT has been a growing force in providing quality up-to-date training for law enforcement, corporate security, and the general public.

In 2004, Pro-Active Firearms & Weapons Training changed to Pro-Active Training Institute, as the scope of training expanded. To date, PTI has trained numerous law enforcement officers, security professionals, and law-abiding citizens.
